Castaways seals the deal for Mission Beach
Grand Reopening Mid-April 20104 February, 2010
Mission Beach’s iconic beachfront property - Castaways Resort & Spa Mission Beach – has commenced the second stage of a multi-million-dollar redevelopment set to cement Mission Beach as a premier Tropical Queensland holiday destination.
Owner James Neville-Smith has long been progressing a strategic push to position Mission Beach as a bona fide Great Barrier Reef and Rainforest destination, with all local businesses joining in a concerted effort to lift the town’s profile. The upgrade of the iconic resort is a major part of the strategy.
“The reality is Mission Beach is becoming more and more popular as is evidenced in our room rate and occupancy which contrary to regional figures, grew in 2009,” said Mr Neville-Smith.
“Mission Beach continues to grow in stature as a destination particularly from the European market as a result of a concerted marketing campaign in 2008 and 2009. Last year we directed significant investment to Castaways, creating superb guest rooms and this year will see an even larger amount of funds going into transforming the common areas into a premier absolute beachfront hotel. Castaways is deserving of such investment given its iconic positioning and unbeatable location.”
A new restaurant, beachfront bar and dining area plus kitchen with an open flame grill will be created for the resort.
The existing pool area will be completely renewed into 2 new pools, one being a beachfront 25 metre lap pool surrounded by stylish sun lounges and tropical gardens.
A large tropical lagoon-style pool will be added to the western side of the resort, ensuring guests have a choice of swimming spots.
Mr Neville-Smith said when the upgrade was completed Castaways would offer rooms with direct access to the beachfront pool. It would also create a new class of rooms on level two of the resort with larger balconies featuring day beds and spectacular views of the Coral Sea.
The resort’s reception, porte cochere and tour desk would also be completely upgraded as well as the car park.
Mr Neville-Smith said the works would be due to be completed late April ready for the peak visitor season.
The resort’s Drift Spa – a first for Mission Beach – opened earlier last year right on the edge of the white sands of spectacular Mission Beach, its absolute beachfront location gives an uninterrupted view of Dunk Island and the Coral Sea.
“It’s an exciting era in the redevelopment of Castaways Resort & Spa Mission Beach,” said Mr Neville-Smith. “We are creating something truly special for both locals and visitors to Mission Beach, a truly magical part of Tropical North Queensland.”
Castaways Resort & Spa Mission Beach is Mission Beach’s only absolute beachfront resort. Mission Beach is located approximately 140km south of Cairns.
